Coming Back to Yourself

You have to lose yourself for a little bit because that is the only way you’ll come back to yourself. When you take a path for a long time, being certain of the direction that you are taking, you forget who the person is that is traveling. But when you lose yourself—the person that you counted on to always be certain and consistent—you are forced to reorient yourself in trying to find yourself again. This loss can feel painfully long sometimes. The aimlessness and fear seem to last forever. But sooner or later, you come back to the clarity of who you are. It happens naturally; it’s not a matter of effort or strategy. It’s almost as if, when you are lost, there is no other way but to come back to the starting point because you can’t get more lost when you already are. This starting point is of course not the original starting point. It will be a new starting point. Certain paths have already been crossed so you start from somewhere else. But you can’t go back to someone other than yourself. Life is a constant coming back and meeting yourself again. And when you meet, you are full of love for yourself, your life, and humanity. It’s strange how coming back to yourself takes you out of yourself. I guess we are only truly home when we hold the world in our hearts.
