Early Mornings

I love the early mornings before the sun has risen high enough to lighten the sky, when everything outside is bathed in blue light with a golden undertone. The world, despite the familiar trees and buildings, looks cold and untouched. There is something otherworldly about this kind of world. It may be the same sort of appeal that the arctic tundras have for people who travel to Alaska, Iceland, or the Scandinavian countries. The cold, treeless landscape that feels frozen in a point in time that is not ours. The cathartic feeling of being somewhere that finds you a ripple in its otherwise undisturbed existence. Maybe this unfamiliar quiet promises more possibilities.

As more time passes, a lone bird starts to chirp. Soon it will be joined by the chirps of many other birds, all in different pitches and rhythms. But for now, it is only this early riser. Life is making itself known. The sky will lighten. There is no stirring of people yet though. No sounds of footsteps or cars, the squeaking of faucets, or thumping of pipes. This kind of stillness tells me what it means for a day to begin.
